Petula Clark, CBE, is an English singer, actress, and songwriter, born on 15 November 1932, in Ewell, Surrey, England. Encouraged by her father, she began singing professionally at the age of seven and made her radio debut at nine, becoming a familiar voice on wartime radio and in concerts for troops. By the late 1940s, she was an established star, appearing in films alongside notable actors like Peter Ustinov, Anthony Newley, and Alec Guinness. Her first recordings were Rank promo 78s in 1949, followed by her first commercial release, "House In The Sky" / "Put Your Shoes On Lucy," also in 1949. She signed with Polygon Records in 1950, achieving her first chart success in 1954 with "The Little Shoemaker." Petula enjoyed a series of hits in the U.K. from the 1950s to the early 1970s, including two number ones: "Sailor" and "This Is My Song." A remix of "Downtown" in 1988 brought her back to the UK Top 10. In 1957, she gained popularity in Europe with "With All My Heart" and her first French hit, "Histoire d'un amour."
