Phafner was a US band from Marshalltown, Iowa, active in the early 1970s. Formed in 1969, they quickly gained local attention with their hard-edged, drug-induced brand of rock & roll. The band comprised two sets of brothers: Dale Shultz on guitars and vocals, James Shultz on bass, Steve Smith on lead guitar, and Greg Smith on vocals, along with Steven Gustafson on drums. In 1971, they recorded their sole album, "Overdrive," featuring six original songs in a local basement studio. To attract interest from major labels, they pressed 50 copies of the album on the Dragon label. Released in 1972, "Overdrive" has since become legendary among collectors of hard rock music, with original copies fetching over $3,000 on today's market. The album, clocking in at just over 25 minutes, showcases great blues-influenced hard rock with plenty of fuzz guitar.
