Pheeroan Aklaff is a free jazz drummer born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 27, 1955. He is the brother of a classical pianist and has been associated with the free jazz movement since 1975. Aklaff began his career in New Haven, Connecticut, and later moved to New York City, where he collaborated with notable artists such as Anthony Davis and James Newton from 1978 to 1979, and participated in Davis's project Episteme starting in 1981. He was involved in various projects, including 'Jump Up' in 1983, 'Very Very Circus' from 1984, and worked with Ray Anderson and Mark Helias in 1989, as well as Craig Harris's Tailgaters in the 1990s.
