Pheeroan Aklaff is a Free Jazz drummer born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 27, 1955. He comes from a musical family, with a brother who is a classical pianist. Aklaff has been associated with the free jazz movement since 1975, beginning his career in New Haven, Connecticut, before moving to New York City. He has collaborated with notable musicians, including Anthony Davis and James Newton from 1978 to 1979, and was part of Davis's ensemble Episteme starting in 1981. He also played in the group Jump Up from 1983, participated in performances with other artists from 1982 to 1983, and was involved with Very Very Circus from 1984. In the late 1980s, he worked with Ray Anderson and Mark Helias, and in the 1990s, he played with Craig Harris's Tailgaters.
