Malik Isaac Taylor, known professionally as Phife Dawg, was born on November 20, 1970, in Queens, New York, and passed away on March 22, 2016. He was an American rapper and a member of A Tribe Called Quest, formed with high school classmates. Phife Dawg was affectionately nicknamed the Five Foot Assassin and The Five Footer due to his height of 5 ft 3. His stage name was inspired by the fife, a small flute commonly used in military and marching bands, as referenced by Q-Tip in the song "Jazz." Phife Dawg is also featured as a playable character in the video games NBA 2K7 and NBA 2K9.
