Phil Julian is a UK-based composer and improviser who has been active since the late 1990s, primarily working with modular electronic devices and computers. His audio works, released under his own name and the alias Cheapmachines, have been featured on various labels, including Entr’acte, The Tapeworm, Superpang, Harbinger Sound, Banned Production, Confront Recordings, Conditional, Staalplaat (Open Circuit imprint), Beartown Records, and con-v, along with numerous compilation appearances. Julian operated the Authorised Version label from 2000 to 2020. He has collaborated on remixes, recordings, and performances with notable artists such as John Macedo, Dale Cornish, Jason Kahn, Tomas Korber, Michael Renkel, Daniel Jones, Kostis Kilymis, Tom Mudd, Angharad Davies, Dominic Lash, Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga, Maurizio Bianchi, Andie Brown, Ryan Jordan, Nihilist Assault Group, The New Blockaders, and GX Jupitter-Larsen of The Haters. Additionally, he is a member of the improvised drone ensemble Signals, alongside Mark Beazley and Chris Gowers, and has performed with Mark Wastell’s improvising group The Seen.
