Phil Yost (1930 - 1997) was an experimental composer and multi-instrumentalist from Santa Cruz, known for blending jazz, folk, rock, and psychedelia into a unique hypnotic sound. He made his debut in 1967 with the album "Bent City" on John Fahey’s Takoma Records, followed by "Fog-Hat Ramble" in 1968 and "Touchwood’s Dream" in 1970. Yost recorded all instruments himself, utilizing early overdubbing and looping techniques. While he faded into relative obscurity outside of Santa Cruz, where he remained a respected figure in jazz circles, he spent his later years reengineering the upright bass, showcasing his innovative spirit. His work is now being reissued and rediscovered, starting with the 2025 reissue of "Bent City," which includes unreleased material and archival discoveries.
