Philip Jeck (15 November 1952 - 25 March 2022) was a Liverpool-based artist who studied visual art at Dartington College of Arts. He began working with record players and electronics in the early 1980s, creating soundtracks and touring with various dance and theatre companies, in addition to his solo concert work. Jeck is best known for his performance "Vinyl Requiem," created with Lol Sargent, which featured 180 '50s/'60s record players and won the Time Out Performance Award in 1993. He also produced "Vinyl Codas I-IV" for Bavarian Radio, with "Coda II" receiving the Karl Sczuka prize for Radio Art. In his later years, he returned to visual art, creating installations that utilized between 6 to 80 record players, including "Off The Record" for Sonic Boom at The Hayward Gallery in London. Jeck creatively repurposed old records and record players sourced from junk shops, using them as musical instruments and developing a personal language that evolved with each layer of sound.
