Phill Niblock (October 2, 1933 – January 8, 2024) was an influential American artist born in Anderson, Indiana. He initially earned a degree in Economics before shifting his focus to photography and film in 1960. During the early 1960s, he captured portraits of prominent figures in New York's jazz and avant-garde art scenes, including Duke Ellington, Sun Ra, John Cage, and Yoko Ono. Niblock drew inspiration from Morton Feldman's extended compositions and other musical influences, leading him to create his own music and become involved with the Sonic Arts Union alongside artists like Gordon Mumma and Alvin Lucier. Since the early 1970s, he has operated the non-commercial Experimental Intermedia organization, which continues to host concerts in his loft on Centre Street in New York City.
