Phluph was a short-lived psychedelic band from Boston, Massachusetts, active in the late 1960s. The band consisted of members Benson Blake IV, Lee Dudley, Joel Maisano, and John Pell. They released one self-titled album and two singles, characterized by trippy lyrics, heavy organ sounds, and impressive guitar work. Phluph had a slightly more commercial appeal compared to many other bands associated with the Bosstown Sound. The Bosstown Sound was a publicity campaign initiated by producer Alan Lorber, aimed at marketing various Boston-based psychedelic bands, including The Ultimate Spinach and Eden’s Children, as part of a singular movement to rival the San Francisco scene and the Mersey-Beat sound from the UK. However, this effort faced criticism from rock critics and the underground music community, who viewed it as a shallow corporate attempt to commercialize the counter-culture amid strong anti-establishment sentiments due to the Vietnam War. As a result of the backlash against the Boston scene, many bands, including Phluph, struggled to achieve the sales and recognition they deserved. Phluph eventually disbanded, leaving behind their sole album released by Verve in 1968. Since its rediscovery, the album has received mixed reviews, with some praising it while others have been more critical.
