Phurpa is a Russian musical collective and performance group that specializes in authentic ritual music of Bon, the oldest Buddhist tradition from Tibet. The group was formed in 2003 and is named after Phurpa Drugse Chempa, a tutelary deity in the Bon tradition. The founding member and leader, Alexey Tegin, began exploring traditional and ritual music in the mid-1990s at the Cardinal Art Factory in Moscow, where he was influenced by the spiritual traditions of Bon and Dzogchen, as well as by singing masters from Gyumay and Gyuto tantric colleges. Phurpa's lineup includes Alexey Tegin, Daniil Zotov, and Dmitry Tarakanov, with former members such as Dmitry Globa-Mikhailenko, Eduard Utukin, Andrey Grekov, Cheslav Merk, Pavel Selchukov, Anastasia Tomskaya, and Nikita Korolev. The band members are dedicated to studying ancient Tibetan liturgical practices and ceremonies of the Bon tradition. The group's distinctive style is characterized by a form of tantric overtone singing known as gyukye, which involves extensive training in meditation, breathing, and vocal exercises. Phurpa employs various ritual Tibetan instruments in their performances, including the dungkar, dungchen, silnuyen, nga, damaru, kangling, shang, and rolmo.
