Phuture is a Chicago-based Acid House group founded in 1985 by DJ Pierre, Earl 'Spanky' Smith (also known as DJ Spank Spank), and Herbert 'Herb J' Jackson. Their passion for House Music began in the early 1980s when they frequented the Music Box in Chicago to hear the innovative DJ Ron Hardy. Inspired by Hardy's sound, Smith proposed forming their own group to create music that Hardy could play in his sets. In 1985, Spanky discovered a Roland TB-303, which they would later use to create a groundbreaking new sound known as "Acid." They manipulated the 303's knobs while playing patterns, transforming its original purpose. Phuture's debut track, "Acid Tracks," was released in 1986 and quickly gained popularity in Chicago, especially after Hardy featured it in his cassette sets. The track was officially released by Trax Records in 1987, thanks to the production work of Marshall Jefferson, and it became a global sensation, inspiring many fans and aspiring producers in the dance music scene. DJ Pierre left the group in 1990, but Spanky continued Phuture with various members until 1996, collaborating with artists like Ron Maney (DJ Skull) and Roy Davis Jr. In 2014, Pierre and Spanky reunited with new member Rio "The Musician" Lee, and they are currently working on new music and a tour.
