**Piano Slim (Robert T. Smith)** Born in 1928 in La Grange, Texas, Piano Slim, originally known as Robert Smith, is a talented blues singer and pianist. He first recorded a 78 for an independent label in Houston, Texas, in 1949 and later released a 45 in St. Louis in 1959. After a 13-year hiatus from music due to marriage, he returned to the scene as Piano Slim. Slim's musical journey began in Houston clubs, where he initially started as a singer and learned to play drums. He played as a drummer for notable blues artists, including Lightning Hopkins, until a shooting incident forced him to shift his focus to the piano. After working as a sideman in Houston, he recorded "Squeeze Me Baby" and later moved to St. Louis, where he recorded for the Bobbin label and gained popularity. In St. Louis, Slim played piano for several legendary artists and eventually formed his own band, performing in local clubs for about five years. After starting a family, he stepped away from music for over a decade, taking a job as a psychiatric aide. Once that job ended, he returned to his passion for blues, playing with a group called the "Bluesmachine," which later became known as "Piano Slim and the Bluesmachine."
