Picky Picnic was a Japanese New Wave Experimental Punk Rock/Techno Pop group active throughout the 1980s. It was conceived by Yūji Asuka (also known as Makoto Ori, A.K.A Francis) and Kaoru Todoroki (Takashi Date, A.K.A 魂列車1号 "Soul Train 1") during their high school years in the early 80s. Cartoonist Kiriko Kubo joined the group in the mid-80s as an illustrator, lyricist, and vocalist. The band's music is characterized by distorted vocal performances paired with unusual acoustic and electronic instrumentation, often presented in a humorous manner. They are regarded as a staple of the 80s underground scene and performed live only once at an event in Aoyama CAY. Picky Picnic released four major albums: - **Picnic Land (1982)**: The group’s debut hand-made cassette album, produced in limited quantities. - **Ha! Ha! Tarachine (1985)**: Their first professionally-produced vinyl LP, which experimented with higher-quality sound and revisited themes from Picnic Land. - **Cynical Hysteria World (1986)**: A double-vinyl EP based on Kiriko Kubo’s “Cynical Hysterie Hour” cartoon series, marking her full incorporation into the group.
