Pierre-Yves Macé is a French composer born in 1980, known for his work at the intersection of contemporary classical, electroacoustic composition, and sound art. He studied music, including piano and classical percussion, before turning to self-taught composition. His first recording, Faux-Jumeaux, was released in 2002 on Tzadik, John Zorn’s label, and was followed by several records on Sub Rosa, Orkhêstra, and Brocoli. A significant aspect of Macé’s work involves the use of recorded sound, documents, or archives as primary material. His ongoing project, Song Recycle, composed in 2010 for piano and loudspeaker, incorporates a selection of amateur vocal performances sourced from YouTube. Macé's music has been performed by various ensembles, including Ictus, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Cairn, l’Instant Donné, Orchestre de chambre de Paris, and Hong Kong Sinfonietta, among others. He has received commissions from notable festivals such as the Festival d’Automne à Paris, Villette Sonique, and Ars Musica, and has opened for artists like Matmos and Andrew Bird. Collaboration is a key element of Macé’s career, as he has worked with artists, writers, directors, and dancers across various disciplines.
