**Pigbag Bio** Pigbag was a British post-punk band active from 1980 to 1983, formed in Cheltenham by Chris Hamlin. He brought together multi-instrumentalist Roger Freeman, trumpet player Chris Lee, and guitarist/alto saxophonist James Johnstone. Later, Andrew "Chip" Carpenter (drums) and Mark Smith (bass), both former members of Johnstone's previous band Hardware, joined for informal rehearsals. During these jam sessions, they developed their first hit from an idea Hamlin had before the band's formation. Simon Underwood, previously associated with another band, joined along with tenor saxophonist Ollie Moore. Underwood's connection with manager Dick O'Dell led to their first gig, supporting another act at Bristol's Romeo and Juliets. Following a successful 20-minute performance of their first song, O'Dell invited them to record it for his label the next day. In 1981, Pigbag released their debut single, "Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag," on O'Dell's Y Records, inspired by James Brown's "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag." The instrumental track became an underground dance hit, selling thousands of copies and achieving high positions in the independent charts. However, feeling overwhelmed by the band's dynamics, Hamlin left. In April 1982, they released their first album, "Dr. Heckle & Mr Jive," which topped the indie charts for several weeks. A
