**Bio: Plastics** Formed in 1976, Plastics was a quintessential Tokyo new wave band featuring guitarist/vocalist Toshio Nakanishi, vocalist Chica Sato, guitarist Hajime Tachibana, keyboard player Masahide Sakuma, and programmer Takemi Shima. Known for their quirky musical style and sharp observational lyrics, they satirized postmodern consumer culture, drawing comparisons to U.S. contemporaries like Devo and the B-52's. Initially starting as a party band, Plastics' sound evolved under the influence of glam rock's embrace of superficiality, punk rock's social critique, and the electronic music of Kraftwerk. Unlike their more experimental peers in the Japanese new wave scene, the band’s background in fashion and design set them apart, with Nakanishi as an illustrator, Sato as a stylist, and Tachibana as a graphic designer. This conceptual edge, combined with their sparse sound and English lyrics, facilitated their international breakthrough. Nakanishi's connection with Talking Heads led to the Plastics being managed by the B-52's manager, resulting in their debut single "Copy/Robot" released on the British Rough Trade label and their full-length debut album, *Welcome Plastics*, released by Victor Music in 1979.
