Play Dead was a Post-Punk/Gothic Rock band formed in Oxford in November 1980. The lineup included Rob Hickson on vocals, Pete Waddleton on bass guitar, Mark "Wiff" Smith on drums, and Re-Vox on guitar, who was replaced by Steve Green in 1981. Over five years, the band released three albums, a six-track mini-album, and several singles, also establishing their own label in 1985. In 1984, Hickson and Waddleton initiated a Darkwave project with a keyboardist, who was also Play Dead's guitarist and backing vocalist. Although more material was produced for this project, plans were abandoned after Play Dead disbanded in 1986. In 1992, a remixed edition of their second album was released, featuring bonus tracks, and it marked the third edition of the original record. This album would be reissued again under its original title on CD in 2007. In 2023, a compilation documenting the band's back catalogue was released, along with the band's John Peel Sessions on vinyl.
