Poésie Noire is a Belgian band that gained prominence in the mid-'80s. The band's origins trace back to the early 1980s when members played in a group called De Frigo's, which merged with the symphonic rock band Sofa. This collaboration led to the formation of The Next, which later transformed into A World of Ruins, existing from 1981 to 1982. In 1982-1983, members Willy Hallaert, George Scierski, Luc Seurs, Koen Juvens, and Johan Meylaerts formed another band, while Renaat Deferm joined a group called U-Bahn before founding Poésie Noire. The band is known for its Belgian roots and its development of a goth-oriented, synthetic, and gloomy universe characterized by low-pitched voices. Their name translates to "Black/Dark Poetry," and they have been categorized as EBM, similar to other Belgian electronic music bands of the 1980s. However, they aimed to move away from the typical industrial aggressiveness of Electronic Body Music, evolving towards a more mainstream accessible dark pop sound, which led to their classification as new wave or Darkwave. The band members have included Jo "LA BETE NOIRE" on guitar, bass, piano, keys, and vocals; Marianne "Ice Queen" on vocals, keys, and lyrics; and Sam on drum machines.
