Poison Idea was formed in 1980 in Portland, Oregon, by vocalist Jerry A (Lang). The original line-up included drummer Dean Johnson, guitarist Tom Roberts (also known as Pig Champion), and bassist Glen Estes. The band drew inspiration from influential groups such as The Germs, Black Flag, Discharge, and SOA. By 1983, Chris "Tense" replaced Glen on bass, leading to the release of their debut EP, "Pick Your King," followed by "Record Collectors are Pretentious Assholes," both issued on the Fatal Erection label, managed by Pig Champion and Malcom Conover. In 1986, Poison Idea released the "Kings of Punk" LP on Pushead's Pusmort label. The band's line-up, particularly the rhythm section, experienced numerous changes in the following years. By 1989, they established their own label, American Leather, starting with a reissue of their 1982 demo. The band recorded the "Discontent" 7" with a line-up that included Jerry A., Pig Champion, Myrtle Tickner, and Thee Slayer Hippie, with the second guitarist switching between "Mondo" and Aldine Strichnine. In 1990, they released the "Feel the Darkness" LP.
