Portable, the musical project of Alan Abrahams, emerged from the post-apartheid era of South Africa, embodying the spirit of a generation that contributed to Nelson Mandela's freedom. Celebrated for his live performances, he relocated to London in 1997, where he began recording under the name Portable. His work combines the indigenous African sounds of his youth with the futuristic aesthetics of electronic music. In 2002, he founded the record label Süd Electronic, releasing his first single "Gridshift," which received acclaim from publications like The Wire and De:Bug. Portable's discography includes several full-length albums, starting with "Futuristic Experiments #005" in 2002 and "Cycling" in 2003, the latter winning a Red Dot design award for outstanding graphic design. In 2005, he released "Version" on ~Scape records, and in 2007, he moved to Lisbon, where he recorded "Powers of Ten," further exploring his African heritage through innovative soundscapes. His single "Knowone Can Take Away" released in 2008 on Berlin's Perlon label was praised by Groove magazine as a beautiful and impactful track. For five years in Lisbon, he also launched his alter ego project BODYCODE, releasing "The Conservation of Electric Charge" with Ghostly International, which garnered positive reviews for its balance between home listening and dancefloor appeal.
