portal iii is a trio of veteran Minnesota musicians featuring bassist Liz Draper, drummer Chris Gray, and guitarist Charlie Parr. Draper, known for her work with the Grammy Award-winning Okee Dokee Brothers and the Balkan folk group Orkestar Bez Ime, discovered a mutual interest in drone and ambient music while touring with Parr. The group was formed when Draper recruited Gray, a former bandmate from the doom project Up the Mountain Down the Mountain. Their diverse tastes and playing styles inspired them to explore new sonic territory, leading to the creation of portal iii. Their self-titled debut double LP consists of four deep listening instrumental pieces and was recorded over two days at Real Phonic Studio in Cleveland, MN, with Erik Koskinen. The recording took place amidst hail and a tornado on the rolling prairie landscape, which resonates with their sonic template and connection to place.
