Porter Ricks, named after a character from the '60s TV show Flipper, is a duo specializing in subaquatic dub techno. Comprised of ambient artist Thomas Köner and beatmaker Andy Mellwig, they debuted with three 12" releases on the Basic Channel sublabel Chain Reaction between 1995 and 1996. Their sound, characterized by a blend of static hum and fuzzy beats, drew from undersea sonar frequencies and wind-tunnel ambience, distancing itself from the harder effects of Detroit techno and Plastikman material. These singles gained popularity within the experimental techno scene of the mid-'90s, influencing even Plastikman. In 1996, they released the CD collection BioKinetics on Chain Reaction and subsequently moved to Force Inc., where they produced the double-pack Redundance EP and singles "Spoil" and "Exposed." They also recorded a single for Barooni before compiling their Force Inc. works into a self-titled CD in 1997. Two years later, they collaborated with Techno Animal on the album Symbiotics. Following this, Mellwig released a full-length as Continuous Mode, while Köner continued to innovate in ambient music with releases on labels like Mille Plateaux, Touch, and Die Stadt. In 2016, Porter Ricks reunited for a performance at the Berlin Atonal festival, leading to the release of the Shadow Boat EP on Tresor, marking their first new material in 17 years. This
