Positive Force was an eight-piece funk/soul band formed in Pennsylvania by Brenda Reynolds and Albert Williams. The group featured six males and two females, with Reynolds and Vickie Drayton as the female vocalists. They were discovered by Nate Edmonds, a talented organist, pianist, writer, arranger, and producer associated with All Platinum/Stang/Sugarhill Records, who helped them secure a deal with Sugarhill. Edmonds, who also played organ with Curtis Knight & the Squires, a band that included Jimi Hendrix in the mid-'60s, served as the group's mentor. Positive Force's most notable performance was an uncredited appearance providing party ambiance on the Sugarhill Gang's hit "Rapper's Delight." However, they struggled to achieve success under their own name. Their debut single, "We Got the Funk," released in 1979, flopped in the United States but became a modest club hit in the United Kingdom. In 1980, Sugarhill released their album titled Positive Force, along with the single "Especially for You." Despite not achieving commercial success in the U.S., they garnered a cult following in the U.K. and made an appearance on the Top of the Pops television show, marking their only taste of stardom.
