Poverty Five was a garage rock band from Centralia, Washington, active from 1965 until 1968, during which time they became known as Poverty's People in 1967. In the summer of 1967, the band was gaining popularity, performing extensively across the Northwest, from Oregon to Idaho. They opened for iconic bands like The Doors and the Grateful Dead on two occasions and headlined notable events such as the Colosseum and the Lewiston Idaho Trips Festival. Their performance at the Portland Trips Festival earned them significant acclaim. The band also played nightly for a month at the Pypo Club in Seaside, enjoyed surf activities during the day, and performed at various colleges and high school dances. They even traveled to San Francisco to experience the Haight and Golden Gate Park during the Summer of Love, eventually hitchhiking back to Washington with just three dollars, indulging in pot, excellent hash, and acid in the lush coastal forests along the way. Former member J. Frederic Teubner shared these memories in August 2014.
