Pretenders are an English-American rock band formed in Hereford, England, in March 1978, emerging from the British post-punk movement. The band has evolved into a mainly four-piece outfit and has experienced numerous personnel changes, with Chrissie Hynde as the only consistent member. An original member returned after an absence of several years. As of 2017, the current members include Chrissie Hynde (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Martin Chambers (drums, percussion, backing vocals), and two other members on bass and lead guitar, along with a member playing pedal steel guitar and providing backing vocals. The band has had several notable ex-members throughout its history, including various musicians on bass and guitar. In recognition of their contributions to music, Pretenders were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 as performers.
