Procol Harum is a band that emerged in 1967 after the disbandment of a rhythm & blues group. They achieved their first major success with the hit "A Whiter Shade of Pale," co-written by Gary Brooker and Keith Reid, which became a hallmark of symphonic rock. The band's name, Procol Harum, was suggested by a friend and record company owner, derived from a mis-spelling of the Latin phrase "Procul Harun," meaning "far beyond these things," and also linked to the name of his Siamese cat. The original lineup for their first single included Gary Brooker on vocals and piano, Keith Reid for the lyrics, Matthew Fisher on Hammond organ, David Knights on bass, Ray Royer on guitar, and session drummer Bill Eyden. Procol Harum re-formed in October 1991, releasing "The Prodigal Stranger" with a lineup featuring Brooker, Reid, Fisher, and guitarist Robin Trower, along with guest musicians Dave Bronze on bass, Mark Brzezicki on drums, and Jerry Stevenson on mandolin and guitar.
