Provoker is an American post-punk band based in Los Angeles, originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. Formed in 2015 by Jonathon Lopez, the project initially focused on creating scores for fictional horror films. The band's sound evolved when Lopez connected with singer, songwriter, and musician Christian Crow Petty at a screening of the American black comedy The Greasy Strangler. After Lopez sent Petty some of his soundtrack pieces, they collaborated, leading to a blend of Lopez's synth-driven experimentation and Petty's R&B-influenced vocals. The band solidified its lineup after the release of the 2018 Dark Angel EP, becoming a three-piece with guitarist Lopez, vocalist Petty, and bassist Wil Palacios.
