Antonis Xylouris, known as Psarantonis, is a renowned Cretan artist born on September 6, 1937, in Anogeia, Mylopotamos, Crete, Greece. He is a singer, Cretan lyre player, composer, lyricist, and actor. Psarantonis is the brother of noted musicians and the father of several children, as well as the husband of Κατερίνα Δουλγεράκη / Κατίνα Ξυλούρη. His nickname, Ψαράκης / Ψαραντώνης, was bestowed upon him in honor of his grandfather, Kαραμουζαντώνης, who was known for his bravery during the Turkish occupation. Self-taught, Psarantonis began playing the Cretan lyre at the age of 9 and performed his first event, a wedding reception, at 13. He made his first recording in 1964 and has since gained international recognition through live performances, earning critical acclaim and awards. Known for the unique timbre of his voice and distinct playing style, he has collaborated with various artists, expanding Cretan music beyond the borders of Crete and Greece. He is often characterized as the most "Rock traditional artist." In 2013, he participated in a documentary about his family and Cretan music.
