Pulsallama was a legendary all-girl bass and percussion band that emerged in Manhattan nightlife in 1981 and 1982. Initially a 12-piece group, they eventually became a 7-piece ensemble. Their distinctive sound was humorously described as “13 girls fighting over a cowbell.” Known for their rowdy behavior, theatrical stage antics, and use of props and costumes, Pulsallama captivated the New York underground scene with their awkward time signatures and dynamic performances, often marked by verbal and physical confrontations among members. In 1982, Pulsallama opened for The Clash, performing in front of an enthusiastic audience of 6,000 who showered them with coins and cups of beer. The band released a single titled ‘Devil Lives in My Husband’s Body’ on Y Records, which was distributed by Rough Trade and became a minor hit on college radio, gaining a cult following.
