Radboud Mens is a sound artist, composer, and sound designer known for his innovative approach to sound creation. He began crafting noise machines in 1988 and, in the early 90s, experimented with attaching contact microphones to dog brushes to manipulate vinyl records through scratch-playing, using broken cassette decks to amplify the results. His early work culminated in a two-CD set released in 1994, where listeners were encouraged to shuffle-mix the discs themselves. In 1995, he collaborated with another artist to release a drone CD that included a 5-inch vinyl locked groove record designed to complement the long drone pieces. From 1997 onward, he began releasing music under his own name, focusing on more minimal and conceptual compositions. His 1998 CD utilized digital clicks and errors collected during his time as a sound engineer at the Centre of Electronic Music in Amsterdam, while his subsequent release was based on a DSP function called ‘convolution,’ which he developed over two years. Mens has collaborated with a diverse range of sound artists and composers and has had his music released by various labels, including some that featured his minimal techno as a series of 12” LPs. He has performed live alongside video artists and co-founded the ERS label in 1999, dedicated to experimental ambient noise and drone music, which has recently resumed activity after a 10-year hiatus.
