Rae & Christian is a British hip-hop and downtempo production team consisting of Mark Rae and Steve Christian. The duo began collaborating in the mid-1990s after meeting in a rehearsal space in Ducie House, Manchester, where Steve kindly pointed out to Mark that his music was out of key. They were the first act to emerge from a label founded by Mark Rae in 1995, which reflected the cosmopolitan vibe of post-rave Manchester. The label introduced various acts, many of whom were discovered by Mark through his Manchester record shop, Fat City. In 1996, Rae & Christian enhanced their sound by enlisting the vocal talents of Veba, leading to attention from the dance music press with their contributions to the Grand Central compilations in 1995 and 1996. Their debut album, released in 1998, showcased their potential, with successful singles like "Leave It" and "You" receiving critical acclaim. Their appreciation for hip-hop allowed them to collaborate with respected hip-hop acts, which distinguished them from their contemporaries. They also gained production credits with popular bands, contributing to albums in the late 1990s. Their second album, released in 2001, brought new dimensions to their sound by incorporating live instrumentation and varied songwriting partnerships. After a hiatus, their third album, released in 2013, continued to refine their blend of hip-hop ethics, traditional songwriting, and modern production technology.
