Rafael Cortijo, also known as "Rafaelito," "Rafi," or "Timbe," is a Puerto Rican salsa percussionist born on September 13, 1954, in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He is the nephew of renowned percussionist and composer Rafael Cortijo and has dedicated his career to preserving his uncle's musical legacy. Rafi's early life was influenced by the sounds of Cortijo and his Combo, and he has consistently honored his uncle's memory throughout his work. Rafi Cortijo's contributions to music include playing minor percussion on the 1975 album "Champions" by Rafael Cortijo, where he performed on tambourine, congas, and timbales. He also played congas on the 1978 album "Uno" by singer Eladio Torres, collaborating with Eduardo 'Sabú' Rosado. In 1986, he was instrumental in the recording of "Los Hijos de la Salsa," where he handled congas, timbales, and bongós under the direction of Johnny 'El Bravo' Lopez. He recorded the album "Tribute to Maestro Cortijo" with Tito Allen, produced by Carlos Román, and has maintained a close friendship with various artists, often paying homage to the legends of salsa.
