Rafael Toral, born in Lisbon in 1967, has been fascinated by the potential of sound and the functions of music since his teenage years. As a composer and performer, he has explored various musical genres, including Rock, Ambient, Contemporary, Electronic, and Free Jazz throughout different periods of his life. In the 1990s, he worked with electric guitar and electronics, creating a blend of Ambient and Rock, and released acclaimed albums such as "Wave Field" and "Violence of Discovery and Calm of Acceptance." In 2004, he shifted his focus and launched the Space Program, an ambitious long-term project that lasted until 2017. This project explored electronic music based on silence, decision-making, and physical gesture, drawing inspiration from post-free Jazz. The resulting music was described as "melodic without notes, rhythmic with no beat, familiar but strange, meticulous but radically free," and was noted for being more visceral and emotive than that of his cerebral peers. During this time, he also directed the Space Quartet. In 2014, Toral relocated to the mountains of central Portugal to pursue a more sustainable lifestyle. After concluding the Space Program in 2017, he entered a "third phase" of his career, returning to guitar and exploring jazz harmonies alongside the instruments from the Space Program, as demonstrated in his work "Spectral Evolution" (2024).
