Rage Against the Machine (often abbreviated as RATM or R.A.T.M.) is an American alternative, funk metal, and modern rock band formed in 1991 in Los Angeles, California. They are known for their unique blend of hip hop, heavy metal, punk, and funk, as well as their revolutionary politics and lyrics. The band split up in October 2000 when Zack de la Rocha decided to leave for a solo career, leading the remaining members to join another project. After a seven-year hiatus, Rage Against the Machine reunited in 2007 for a series of shows. In 2017, the other band members formed the supergroup Prophets of Rage with Chuck D and DJ Lord from Public Enemy and B-Real from Cypress Hill. Following the announcement of RATM's return in 2019, Prophets of Rage was disbanded. The band's second reunion ended in January 2024.
