Raphy Leavitt was a Puerto Rican musician who formed his orchestra, La Selecta, in 1970. He aimed to create a unique sound and style, selecting a repertoire of songs that conveyed positive, social, and philosophical messages. Leavitt arranged his band's sound to be raw and powerful, reminiscent of the all-trombone salsa style popularized by Willie Colón, while incorporating trumpets for added elegance. He also composed some of the songs for La Selecta.
