Red House Painters was an American alternative rock group formed in 1989 in San Francisco, CA, and disbanded in 2001. The band consisted of members Mark Kozelek (vocals, guitar), Gordon Mack (guitar), Anthony Koutsos (drums), Jerry Vessel (bass), and Phil Carney (guitar). Known for their varied musical tones, ranging from light acoustic numbers to more powerful plugged-in tracks, they established themselves as one of the premier indie rock outfits of the mid-'90s. Led by singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek, the band explored the dark and dirty side of human nature through his haunting vocals and candid lyrics, which revealed his insecurities and emotional struggles against the backdrop of the band's skeletal instrumentation.
