Red Nichols and His Five Pennies were a prominent band in the New York Jazz scene during the 1920s. They recorded under various names, including the Arkansas Travelers, The Hottentots, and Miff Mole and His Little Molers. Their music was often described as "Chamber Jazz," characterized by a cool, somewhat detached, yet urban and sophisticated sound, which contrasted with the more intense styles of the time. In 1959, Hollywood released a highly fictionalized film about the band titled "The Five Pennies," featuring Danny Kaye in the role of Red Nichols.
