Red Nichols and His Five Pennies were a prominent band in the New York Jazz scene during the 1920s. They recorded under various names, including the Arkansas Travelers, The Hottentots, and Miff Mole and his Little Molers. Critics often referred to their style as "Chamber Jazz," which, while lacking in hot intensity, offered a cool, somewhat detached, yet urban and sophisticated sound. In 1959, Hollywood released a highly fictionalized film about the band titled "The Five Pennies," featuring Danny Kaye as Red Nichols.
