Woodrow Wilson "Red" Sovine was an American country music singer and songwriter, born on July 7, 1917, in Charleston, West Virginia. He was known for his association with truck-driving country songs, particularly those that were recited as narratives set to music. Some of his most notable works include "Giddyup Go" (1965) and "Teddy Bear" (1976), both of which reached the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. He also had other popular songs like "Little Rosa" and "Phantom 309." In addition to his own hits, Sovine wrote successful songs for other artists, including “Missing You,” recorded by Jim Reeves, and “Why Baby Why,” recorded by Webb Pierce. Tragically, on April 4, 1980, Sovine suffered a heart attack while driving in southern Nashville, which led to a fatal accident when he ran a red light and struck an oncoming vehicle.
