Remmy Ongala, born in 1947 in Kindu, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), was an influential African guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader, affectionately known as the "Doctor." He began performing in bands at the age of sixteen, honing his craft under the guidance of his father, a respected traditional musician. In 1978, he moved to Dar es Salaam, where he joined Orchestra Super Makassy and later established his own band, Super Matimila, named after a local businessman who financed their instruments. Ongala's majestic presence and distinct, soulful voice resonated above the vibrant rhythms of Super Matimila. His music blended the rolling melodic drive of Zairean soukous with traditional Tanzanian rhythms, alongside influences from Latin and Soul. In Tanzania, he enjoyed immense popularity, with his reputation reaching even the most remote areas. His lyrics often served as allegories, critiquing the ruling elite while addressing the concerns of ordinary Tanzanians. Notably, his song "Mambo Kwa Soksi" tackled the issue of AIDS. Ongala described his music as "ubongo beat," meaning "brain music" in Swahili, emphasizing its thoughtful themes. Remmy Ongala passed away at his home in Dar es Salaam due to kidney failure on December 13, 2010.
