Renaldo Domino is a Chicago soul and funk singer born on March 27, 1950, in "The Valley" around 49th & Forestville. He earned his stage name because his voice was sweet like 'Domino' sugar. Renaldo began recording while still attending Calumet High School on the south side of Chicago. His first recording, "I'm Hip to Your Game" / "I Love My Girl," was made in a small, low-budget studio and released in limited quantities on the Arnell record label. This initial success helped him secure a recording contract with Mercury Records. Under Mercury's Smash subsidiary, Renaldo released two records that received radio play in Chicago, leading him to tour the Midwest with his band, the Dots. His final single with Mercury, "Just Say the Word," became his biggest hit on the label. However, due to a lack of promotion, he left Mercury and signed with Chicago's Twinight label. He released three singles on Twinight, all produced by Richard Pegue. While "Not Too Cool to Cry" and "Let Me Come Within" gained local radio play, his last single, "You Need to Be Loved On," saw little promotion, resulting in Domino's release from the label. After several unsuccessful attempts to secure a record deal with other Chicago labels, he ultimately left music to pursue another career.
