Rev. Gary Davis was an African-American blues and gospel singer and guitarist, born on April 30, 1896, in Laurens County, South Carolina, and he passed away on May 5, 1972, in Hammonton, New Jersey. Born partially blind, he lost the remainder of his sight at a young age. A self-taught musician, Davis developed a unique multi-voice style using only his thumb and index finger, playing ragtime, traditional, blues, and original tunes in four-part harmony. He became a well-known figure performing on the streets of New York near Harlem. In the 1930s, he occasionally accompanied other artists as a second guitarist on recordings. After being ordained as a minister, Davis recorded blues less frequently, focusing more on his faith. His influence has extended to numerous musicians over the years.
