**Rex Rabanye** Born in Potchefstroom in 1944, Rex Rabanye is one of South Africa's longest-standing musicians. He lived through the harsh apartheid era and is notable for being one of the few black musicians to attain a university education, earning degrees in Law, Labour Relations, and Public Relations, along with a political education. Despite his qualifications, Rex faced significant challenges in finding employment, working as a cleaner, car washer, and later as a clerk in a furniture shop. His political interests led to trouble, resulting in multiple incarcerations where he endured brutal treatment. During his time in jail, Rex and other inmates found solace in music, forming a group called The Teenage Lovers. After his release, the group recorded several successful albums in the 1980s, known for their soulful-pop melodies and uplifting messages. Following the disbandment of The Teenage Lovers, Rex Rabanye continued his career as a solo artist, releasing numerous records while maintaining the soulful themes he had developed as a composer, organ player, and singer with the group.
