**Richard Berry** Born: April 11, 1935, Extension, Louisiana, USA Died: January 23, 1997, Los Angeles, California, USA Richard Berry was an American R'n'B singer, songwriter, and musician known for his significant contributions to the music scene during the 1950s and 1960s. He performed and recorded with various doo-wop bands, particularly those based out of Fremont High School. Berry is best known for writing and recording the original version of "Louie, Louie," which became a staple in the Northwest music scene and is one of the most covered songs in rock history. Berry recorded "Louie, Louie" in March 1957 with his band, The Pharaohs, but it gained national fame when covered by The Kingsmen in 1963. The song became immensely popular in the Northwest, being played frequently at dances and covered by numerous bands, including Paul Revere and the Raiders, Motorhead, and Iggy Pop. The song's slurred lyrics and its controversial nature even led to an FBI investigation. In addition to "Louie, Louie," Berry wrote "Have Love Will Travel" in 1959, which was also covered by notable bands like The Sonics and Paul Revere and the Raiders.
