Richard “Groove” Holmes was an American jazz organist born on May 2, 1931, in Camden, New Jersey. He passed away on June 29, 1991, in St. Louis, Missouri. Influenced by saxophone players, Holmes, like many organists, developed a unique style. He collaborated with Jimmy McGriff for organ battles on the Groove Merchant label and recorded for Muse from 1977 to 1989, working with artists such as Houston Person and Melvin Sparks. Additionally, he recorded some "straight" jazz sessions with notable musicians including Ben Webster, Gene Ammons, and Houston Person.
