Richard Maxfield was an American composer and electronic musician born in Seattle on February 2, 1927. He composed over 100 pieces, with half involving electronics and tape, though only six of these works have been released. Tragically, Maxfield took his own life by jumping out of a hotel window on June 27, 1969. After his death, his belongings were initially cared for by an individual, and in 1975, they were passed on to the DIA Foundation for cataloguing and archiving. Since 1985, the materials have been maintained by the MELA Foundation. In 1959, Maxfield succeeded John Cage as the instructor for the electronic music class at the New School in New York City, where one of his students was noted. He also taught at San Francisco State in 1966 and 1967, and worked as a freelance audio engineer for various labels.
