Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz, sometimes known as the "Reyes de la Salsa" or "Los Embajadores de la Salsa," are a musical duo formed in New York in 1963. Both members are of Puerto Rican origin and played a significant role in popularizing the term 'Salsa' for the musical movement of that era. During an interview on a Venezuelan radio station, Richie Ray jokingly referred to their musical blend as "Ketchup," but later announced it as "Salsa" while playing Richie's "Jala Jala." This catchy name quickly spread through Venezuelan airwaves and resonated with fans, leading to audiences shouting "Salsa!" at their performances. The duo embraced the name, branding their music as Salsa. Venezuelan groups and record labels, such as Discomoda's DCM POP sublabel and Palacios, also adopted the term. Upon their return to Venezuela, they were celebrated as "The Ambassadors of Salsa," having inspired younger generations and influenced the musical landscape. They are also known as Richie & Bobby.
