Rick James was an American vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer, born on February 1, 1948, in Buffalo, New York. He grew up in a challenging environment as the third oldest child in a family of eight, and by the age of 14, he had already encountered legal troubles. In 1964, James went AWOL from the Navy, as his military service interfered with his music career, leading him to flee to Canada for a few years. In the 1960s, he formed his first band, initially called the Sailor Boys, before changing their name. He also created a blues band named The Main Line and was actively singing and writing music. In 1977, he formed a new band, and his first album, “Come Get It,” reached #3 on the R&B charts. His hit singles, “You and I” and “Mary Jane,” the latter being a tribute to marijuana, also achieved significant success, with “You and I” going gold in September 1977 and “Mary Jane” hitting #3 on the US R&B charts in October 1977. Rick James played a pivotal role in launching the "Punk Funk" style and was influential in the music scene during the mid-1980s.
