William Leonard Roberts II, known professionally as Rick Ross, is an American rapper and entrepreneur born on January 28, 1976, in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He was raised in Carol City, Florida, and graduated from Miami Carol City Senior High School before attending Albany State University on a football scholarship. Ross worked as a correctional officer for 18 months before resigning in 1997. He initially debuted in the music industry under the pseudonym Teflon Da Don while at Suave House Records, making his recording debut on the song "Ain't Shhh to Discuss" from Erick Sermon's album. In the mid-2000s, he changed his name to Rick Ross, inspired by the former drug kingpin "Freeway" Rick Ross, with whom he has no connection. In 2009, Ross founded the record label Maybach Music Group and released several studio albums, including Deeper Than Rap (2009), Teflon Don (2010), God Forgives, I Don't (2012), Mastermind, Hood Billionaire (2014), Black Market (2015), and Rather You Than Me (2017). He was the first artist signed to Diddy's management company Ciroc Entertainment and was named the Hottest MC in the Game by MTV in early 2012.
